This place was nothing short of amazing. It ticks all the boxes and exceeded any expectations I had of it. It's probably just as well Kai Galway only does brunch once a week because If it didn't I'd have to go everyday! On a Sunday between 12 and 3 Kai opens it doors to all Galways brunch fenatics, I made sure I was there early to beat the queues and even from 11.30 there were queues down the street. I must admit I was ravenous and I was almost the first in the queue.
When everyone piled in at 12 on the button the place was filled with the most wonderful energy, I bet everyone was looking forward to the breakfast as much as I was! I walked in to find the menu was unusually on a large black board above the window to the kitchen but it was just lovely to have a small menu. All the cakes made me lick my lips as they were displayed all across the counter in front of me, what a way to tempt me!
Of course that yellow table caught my eye! it was sitting right below the window to the kitchen and held water and glasses but was so gorgeous with its little curtain and seriously bright colour against the rusty wall. The window to the kitchen is bloody brilliant, it meant the waiting staff spent less time to and fro to the kitchen and more on the floor with customers, the guy who waited my table was brilliant too, Ludo! They wore casual clothes but were dressed well which gave the restaurant a lovely casual feel.
This is by far the best breakfast I have every had, if not even one of my most favourite meals, actually you know what it probably is. All of my favourite things in one, how couldn't it be! You know the way you go for a meal and order something but wish it just had something extra to give it the wow factor. Well this had it all! Let me take you through it....So it usually comes with a buttermilk biscuit which I'm sure is delicious but I had the dairy free option and they kindly gave me sourdough instead.
To my suprise the hollandaise was made on oil not butter, I can't even begin to describe how happy this made me, I LOVE hollandaise and since going dairy free it's been a no go. Under all the 'lashings' of hollandaise as they call it, were two beautifully poached eggs, I did intend to get a picture of the oozing egg yolk but honestly it was so good I just had to get stuck in. And if what I had so far wasn't delicious enough I then got to the crab, it was from the West coast and boy was it good. so fresh and delicious. On the other side of the sourdough there was the most flavoursome avocado smash and it was all topped with toasted seeds. I'm almost licking my lips now thinking about this dish. It really was the dream breakfast.
One of my favourite things about dishes is trying to figure out whats in them without it being on the menu. The crab was mixed with the most delicious fresh ingredients, there was definitely celery, apple, chilli, dill and spring onions hidden in there, they gave a lovely crunch and freshness to the dish. YUM.
The first meal was so good I had to go back for seconds! I had intended to go try somewhere else out but Kai really was so good I had to try out a second dish. I had my eye on the wild mushrooms in the morning but they were sold out by the time I got back so I went for the granola and I was so glad I did. Don't worry I went for a lovely long walk down on the Salthill promenade to make some space for seconds!
Luckily the yoghurt was sheeps so it was dairy free, I actually hadn't had it before but it was slightly thinner than the usual yoghurt but full of flavour, this granola was a glimpse of heaven. Creamy yoghurt with some kind of cinnamon dust, honey, fresh figs, the prettiest little pansies and pistachios which were nothing short of delicious. The granola itself was so crunchy and yummy. Just look how gorgeous it is!
Along with the food there was the most lovely ingredients and jars of preserve dotted across the room. The colours of fresh lemons and pears just brightened up the space.
This place is gorgeous from the food to the decor, it's got it all! If you're in Galway on a Sunday you've got to check this place out.
